Week 13- Final Reflection

This class overall has helped me understand the concept of discourse community and writing about different genres more in depth than before. How I understood discourse community better is that at first, I didn’t even know what it was at the beginning of the semester but throughout this course I have developed my own definition of understanding about discourse community better. How discourse community relates to the events happening today is that everybody is thinking the same way about everything like how some people are taking it seriously and some are not taking it seriously because some people think this is a hoax but it is not it is very real and it is here in the United States. How a profile can work in talking about using toilet paper is that everyone is always running out to get toilet paper because it is the phsycology part of our brain thinking it is the end of the world because this coronavirus is not going away anytime soon. How arguments over social distancing relate to a profile is that we can argue about people who agree with social distancing and the people who do not agree with social distancing. I agree with social distancing because it is seeming to work all around the world because slowly the number of deaths are going down, and people are not dying as much as they were a couple of weeks ago.

How Journalism and media is responding to this pandemic is interesting because they are actually using real facts from the CDC to peoples stories because right now they want to get the real truth out there to people who are concerned if the virus is in there area or not. How physical distancing is relates to discourse communities is that people think the same thing about physical distancing from everyone for 14 days if you come from out of state. At the beginning of this course you had us write down our goals for this course and what we want to achieve in this class, and I felt like I have met my goals. My first goal was to not be late to classes and I have met this goal so far because I have not missed one class. Another goal of mine was to turn all of my assignments in on time and I felt like I have done that so far. I have achieved on writing what I am passionate about. For example when you asked us to create  profile on what career we wanted to do in the future and I picked social work because that is what I am passionate about because I am passionate about kids and protecting them.

With the photo collaborative project, I understood music and genre because it taught us how music changed over the years with genre or if it stayed the same. I think music has changed over the years because it has turned more of country than anything. How we use tone in the project and our profile is that it is how we perceive the piece and how we word the piece and use language. Language plays a big part in writing because language is the way you can communicate to your audience in the piece. Here is the four readings I did and how they relate to language and genre.

          Twelve Words

What this is about is Brian is trying to get his brother Danny to say his name. Brian becomes frustrated with Danny because he can’t say his name or any of his other sibling’s name, but Brian got his brother to say at least one word that only Brian knew I-an. Danny said the word I-an to tease Brian as well. I like the part where Brian wanted Danny to say his name because he was persistent on getting Danny to say his name. Why was Brian so persistent on Danny saying his name even though Danny could not speak? What I found compelling is also when Danny said I-an before he goes to sleep that means I love you in his language. The idea I have for this story is share a little more about the childhood the two had because he only wrote half of a page worth for the childhood. I like how through all this Brian was by his brothers side no matter what the cost was. What made me sad is that Danny died way to early to enjoy life to the fullest and die old.

No one could see the color blue until modern times

What this is about is that talking about blue and not seeing it before today. What I find interesting about this article is that do not see blue because I always thought people saw blue. An idea I have for this article is that they should have shown a video of people reacting to seeing blue for the first time. What surprised me about this is that Egyptians were the ones to discover the word blue. I like when they did the green square experiment to see if people saw blue. Why did they do this experiment to see blue? What I find weird is that we did not see blue at all before modern times.

How Language Shapes our Perception of Reality

What this article is about is that how language shapes our thoughts and our actions. What I find weird is that they compare the brain to the conception of reality. Why are they saying the brain has a second language in reality? An idea I have for this article is that they should add more information to the section “The Brain with a second language”. Another idea I have is they should add a little bit more information to the whole article itself because it fells kind of short and I am interested in this article. What I like about this article is that they talk about the brain having a second language. What I also like is that how they compare English speakers to languages.

The Concept of Discourse Community

What this pdf is about it compares how one person’s idea can be similar to another person’s idea. An idea I have for this article is that give an example of a Discourse community. What I like about this article it goes in depth on what you need to do to talk about discourse community. What I also like is that they talk about how they use it in an example. What I do not like about this article is that they put to much information in this article. An idea for this article just summarizes what discourse community is about. What is compelling to me is that they talk about how someone can think about a similar thing another person wants to write about.

How this relates to language is that I am trying to tell the audience at these are the best four readings they should read and I put my own perspectives in these four reading and I am telling them what I think these are about. Another way language plays in this four readings reflection is that it plays in the summary that we discuss ad the summary helps the reader decide if they want to read it or not. How genre plays in the four readings is that it plays overall and some of these stories have connections because some of them have similar outlines than the other stories. What I mean by similar outlines is that they are following the same format.

How this shift to online only has impacted me is that I can stay more focused but at the same time I feel distracted because my mom constantly waning me to do things. How this pandemic impacted me positivly is that I get to spend more time with my family and get to spend more time getting to know each other better. How this pandemic impacted me negatively is I don’t to get to see my friends often do to the stay at home order. The one thing I will not take for granted in the future is seeing my friends and spending time with my family because I feel like this pandemic has been tearing families apart when they don’t want to be apart from one another. The first thing I am going to do when this pandemic I over is to go out and hangout with my friends.

How this pandemic affected me mentally is I am fine sure it is hard on the brain to process everything, but I know soon that this will be all over. What I did for my Journalistic work is that I compared Journalism to media because everyone has their general opinion about Journalism and media, but I wanted to uncover the truth about it. With Journalism they get to pick and choose who they want to interview for their paper but, media covers all the stories and what is happening all around us. Overall, this class has been really helpful in my writing skills and helping me expand my horizons on the English language.

Week 12: Revisiting the Readings

Friday Post-Week 11

The process of creating my text is that I first thought of a text to compare to Journalism and I thought it would be a good comparison with media. I thought it was a good comparison with media because Journalism brings us specific things which media brings us everything that we want to know. The Strength of this piece is that comparing Journalism and media. My weakness was trying to find things that were different about them as comparing them. How this compares to discourse community is that they think about a lot of similar things but they both have different goals they want to achieve with writing their stories for people to see.

Friday Post Week 11- Journalist Text

What is the difference between Journalism and media? Journalism is a mass communication between people who don’t know how to use media and it reports on events such as sporting events, or events that are not happening in the United States. Journalism can be covered from every where and any where at any given time if you know the right place to look. Mostly we see Journalism used in sporting events because they get close up in personal with the pictures they have to take for their newspaper. Media is used to spread messages or focus on what is really big out there right now and sometimes they do twist words of Journalists to get people to see only their side of the argument. Media is also used trough internet because that is the way people use to get their news now and days because they don’t want to read the newspaper anymore.

Friday Post: Mid-Term Reflection

What it means to write for a public audience is to narrow down what type of audience that you want to write to and narrow down your topic to that specific group. In our photo collaboration project, we did a public audience, but we also did narrow down the topic to do a specific audience as well. What it means to do web content is that it is something with pictures or something visual that you put on websites. For example, when the special guest speaker he showed us websites we could use for out photo caption project. When we did our photo caption project, we used visuals to describe what we were doing with our topics.

When UCBA has the Activist, it means that people can publish stuff on there that they find interesting or other people should know or give people information about something people didn’t know about before. When I published my profile on the Activist, I thought people should know what happens inside an orphanage daily and how orphanages saved some of those workers lives. When my group published our photo caption project, we thought people should know on what causes anxiety in kids and adults. A student voice is when a student reads an then you asked them how they liked it you just got to listen to them. When we were writing for our Journal entry 2 you asked us a similar question what is our relationship with reading and I answered the same way you just have to listen to the tone of my voice if I liked the reading.

How discourse community relate to the meaning of making development is that we all have our own opinion on things relating to discourse community. When we got into groups on 2/26/20 you had us pick which discourse element to argue and we choose the first one purpose because everyone has a different purpose for their pieces, and they are not all the same. What discourse community means is that a group that shares a common interest with one another. How this relates to the class is that some of us shared some common interests but not all of it.

How our profile plays in all of this is that when we are doing our profiles discourse community came into play and the visuals came into play to. How discourse community came into play because some of us showed common interest with the profile, but we all did something different. How the visuals came into play is that you had us find some pictures for our profiles. How our profiles relate to genre is we all picked a specific thing to talk about and create an essay on that topic. How I used the Activist to illustrate my profile is I looked on what stories we already wrote and what people liked to read about and I thought that people would like to read on how one orphanage changed two peoples lives and the same time other kids lives.

How we related genre to our collaboration project is that we picked to talk about Music and genre and how music changed over the years along with the genre people categorize those types of music in. How this developed a specific genre is that when we were doing the collaboration project, we were thinking broadly about the genre but really, we needed to think about a specific type of genre. The values we used for the project overall is precision, accuracy, positivity, and purpose. The one we used most is the purpose because we wanted to create a purpose for this collaborative presentation, so we all don’t go off on a tangent on the subject we wanted to focus on the music progressed over the years. Another one we used the most is accuracy because we want our collaboration presentation to have all the right stuff in it to get a good grade.

The values I think I have achieved in this class so far is positivity, purpose, Achievement, and harmony. I think I have achieved positivity so far because I always thought positive throughout this entire course so far even though at times I wanted to quit especially with my profile. Purpose is also my value because I came into this class with a purpose of becoming a better writer and a better author with my profile and all the journal entries we do. What I have achieved is publishing my profile for this class because I think everyone should know about orphanages. I also achieved harmony because I stayed calm in everything even though I felt stressed with some of my writing.

What it means to me to publish my work is that it makes me feel accomplished that I did something right. What the publication process made me do is add tags and upload my pictures I used on my word press. My thoughts on this class so far is that I think I am doing very well.

https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/12E9eYucfwUmLTmBZTmxiwAYFET42IBg4bntAWo2W7h0/edit#slide=id.p

Here is what I am going to say with my slide which is the Rock music slide.

  • I would share about the definition of what people think when they here rock music
  • I would have asked what they think when they hear the word rock music
  • I would go into how the genre of rock music has changed over the years.
  • I would show one of the music videos and have them tell me what they think.

Friday Post: Week 5

We have started nothing so far but we are getting information together for our topic. What we plan to do is to find out what causes anxiety/depression between the ages 7-18 and then ages 18 and on. I don’t really have any questions because it is self explanatory. I have have not worked on my own profile because that was not my priority right now. Working collaboratively vs working individually is a huge difference because working with the group you can spread out the work but working alone is having all the work on you and adding pressure on yourself to get everything done on time and turned in.

Friday Post: Week 4

What I did to make my profile publish ready is:

  • I took consideration from one of my peers and added more pictures.
  • I moved around my wording to make one of the quotes first.
  • I deleted some stuff because I had too much information than stories.
  • I added an interview I had with one of the social workers

How my article participates is that it shows stories on two people in the social work field and it will inspire people to go and visit the orphanage and become a social worker. My process was to share some information about the orphanage itself and I shared two stories. I first sketched out what I was going to write about and where I was going to put everything. Then, I started typing what I wanted to be in the profile. What I have done throughout this week to get it ready is add pictures and move some quotes around. I do want to see my profile published on the Activist.

Friday Post-Week 3: Profile 1

Here is a story from a man I talked to at the orphanage on how the orphanage saved his sister’s and his life and his name was John. John said, “When I was 6 years old my sister and I were in a really bad poverty area and my parents couldn’t take care of us anymore, so they sent us to St. Joseph orphanage to get a well-structured life”. He is a counselor at this orphanage because he wants to give back to the people that saved his life in the time, he needed them most. Elaine Billow a worker at this orphanage said this, “Always be there for them no matter what kind of day they are having”. She said this because she deals with all kinds of kids everyday and deals with their emotions every day that is why she said this. The orphanage added family therapy not that long ago because they wanted the parents and children to talk through their differences without hurting each other.

I asked Elaine billow these two questions: How do these kids go about there day and How does it affect her as a worker in the orphanage Here is her answer to the first question,“ The kids who got to school at St. Joseph orphanage no longer live there; they live with their own families or with foster families. The ids who go to school at St. Joseph’s are those who have been discharged from their neighborhood school because of behaviors issues and are in need of intense mental health services. The school day at St. Joseph’s starts 7:30 AM and the kids are served breakfast when they arrive. After breakfast they participate in academics and gym time up until lunch around 11:00 AM. After lunch the kids go to “Group” where they receive mental health therapy. Dismissal is at 2:00 PM”. Her answer to the second question is, “Working at St. Joseph Orphanage has both a posotive and negative effect on me. I enjoy working at St. Joseph’s because I have the opportunity to work with these kids and hopefully make a difference in their lives. These kids need someone to listen to them, to be kind and understanding, and someone to help them get back on the right track. On the negative side it is very difficult to witness, on a daily basis, so many kids suffering and in need of intense therapeutic services”.

Here are some of the kids

The orphanage was started in 1829 by the sisters of clarity. It was named St. Joseph Asylum before it was changed to St. Joseph Orphanage because of behavior issues the children have in the school they previously went to. The original location of this building was on Sycamore Street in downtown Cincinnati but they wanted to expand the orphanage to the westside of Cincinnati and so they moved it to Monfort Heights. Today, they serve 10 counties across southwest Ohio and offices in Cincinnati.

Here is a picture of the Orphanage in Monfort Heights

Observation

  • In October of 1829, the sisters of Clarity started St. Joseph orphanage to give kids a better life than they have now.
  • One quote from a social worker and her name is Elaine Billow is she said, “Always be there for them no matter what kind of day they are having”. What she means by this is that she works at the orphanage as a counselor and a mentor and she sees this kind of stuff everyday.
  • Initially the SJO orphanage was located in a house on Sycamore street in downtown Cincinnati and they provided care for girls who suffered from illnesses and poverty in Cincinnati or some girls would be given up at a young age.
  • SJO quickly began to change and add other programs to support the children and support the families that the children belong to.
  • As the orphanage progressed they have expanded they incorporated family therapy so the children can talk their issues to their parents directly and address some family issues.
  • Another quote she wanted to share is that,” Be that friend they ever wanted and be that loving parent they ever wanted”
  • She says this because they need someone to speak at their level of understanding so they can get the meaning of love.
  • SJO now serves 10 counties across southwest Ohio and offices in Cincinnati.
  • https://aaswsw.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/AASWSW-GC-Accomplishments4-2-2015.pdf
  • In my opinion this orphanages goal is to reach out to the children and be that loving person they can go to.

Friday Post-Week 2

What it means for the activist to profile a group or an individual is that they need to get some information from somewhere to back up there statements and finding everything on the internet won’t get you as far. What I think is important to consider is that not everyone is going to have the same idea as you considering what they are wanting to do. What group I want to interview is a group of social workers that work with putting children into foster care systems to give them a better life.
